Bomarsund
The Bomarsund visitor's center opened in 2022.
MYT has designed and curated an extensive exhibition about the 50 year Russian presence on the island in the first half of the 19th century. In 1809 The Baltic shifted from an all Swedish sea into being an international trading route with conflicting interests held by countries like Russia, France and the United Kingdom.
Many aspects of the lives of the population of Åland were affected and influenced by the presence of Russian soldiers. Family ties were forged and trade increased. The Bomarsund fortress was built over some 40 years and changed the infrastructure of the island.
Åland was turned into a demilitarized zone in 1856 and won its autonomy in 1921.
From the great panorama window visitors get a good view of the demolished fortress.
The entrance hall and the area map.
Åland was a community with fishing at its core, the traditional boatbuilding craft is manifested in the exhibition with a full scale rowing boat.
